Nissan Armada Nismo: surprisingly brilliant

Nismo Badge on an SUV at the High End

The Nismo name has its roots deeply embedded in Nissan’s motorsport division and high performance models. But in the years that have elapsed since, Nissan has continued to expand the badge beyond pure sports cars and apply it to a range of vehicles. The latest is arguably the most surprising of the lot: the Nissan Armada Nismo. On the face of it, a performance version of a full-size three-row SUV seems like an odd idea. The Armada is most firmly placed in the family hauler segment that just happens to have large size and capability built in, but it was never designed as a machine destined to get the driver excited behind the wheel. Somehow, though, Nissan has produced something that makes more sense than one might expect. The Armada Nismo pairs performance styled looks with substantive mechanical upgrades but keeps all the things that make the regular model practical.

Bold Styling That Demands Attention

The sporty Nismo version of the Armada isn’t going to be confused with any other in the family. Nissan has applied an aggressive visual touch to the SUV that makes it immediately different. At the front, a huge grille takes center stage while red exterior accents and bold wheel arch flares shout its sporting purpose.

It rolls on huge twenty-two-inch wheels that balance perfectly with its gigantic proportions. The Nismo badging can be found all over the exterior and makes it clear what kind of vehicle we’re looking at. There is no styling overload, you can just pack all elements together. The changes work to create one of the most eye-catching full-size SUVs on sale.

The result is a car that seems to have muscle and menace at every angle. It might show a little attitude and confidence but it still retains the overbearing presence of a large sport utility vehicle.Further up the range, an even more sporty and premium interior

Once inside the Armada Nismo, the performance theme continues. For sportier feel, cabin is covered in two-tone black leather with red suede inserts. They are formal-appearance bucketseats for the front and second rows that deliver stylish comfort.

Novel Nismo logos are strewn over the cabin, particularly on the headrests and in the far-right bit of the dashboard. If anything, it stops this model from being overstated and raises the exclusivity of this specimen instead. The chairs were another standout, with terrific support without sacrificing comfort. They keep occupants securely in place without becoming uncomfortable on a long trip.

Hallmarks of the dashboard is a pair of expansive fourteen-point-three-inch displays. A screen acts as a digital instrument cluster, while the other doubles up as the centre infotainment display. It has modern, attractive graphics running on a systems with nice crisp visual fidelity and lots of functionality. But the technology is hardly perfect. It also features many menus and settings that can be distracting while behind the wheel. At times, the design of the system feels unnecessarily complex. USB/auxiliary inputs, and wireless smartphone integration for both major mobile platforms are expected as standard features, although the fixed menu bar that sits flush in the bottom of the screen prohibits applications from using the entire display.Meaningful Performance Improvements

The greatest question about the Armada Nismo is if it actually increases performance or just saddles sporty dressing. The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but the content is enough to make it a package worth your time.

The new model receives the same twin-turbocharged three-point-five-liter V-six engine that Nissan has in recent months revised to deliver four hundred sixty horsepower and five hundred sixteen pound-feet of torque on premium fuel. That’s a significant bump over the standard Armada, and it gives the SUV punchier acceleration.

Once you’re moving the engine feels lively and alert. It will be more than enough poke in a vehicle this size, adding some nice satisfaction to the top-end. A bespoke exhaust note is developed too, offering a more aggressive characteristic. Under heavy acceleration drivers can even hear the turbochargers doing their work. The nine-speed auto is faultless. Responsive when called upon, and docile enough to be nearly invisible around town

Sharper Handling Without Sacrificing Comfort

However, the most unexpected part of the Armada Nismo is how it handles once the road gets a bit curvy. The adaptive air suspension has been updated with firmer tuning that substantially cuts body movement.Despite nobody mistaking the Armada Nismo for a sports car, it does have more confidence than the standard version thanks to its revised suspension. A true joy when the SUV feels more even-keeled and sorted while driving hard.

Not all dynamic changes are completely for the best. It has a quicker but far too light feel paired with uninformative steering. It fails to share the road surface particularly well, and does not find its way into concert with the improvements made elsewhere.Likewise, the brakes are carried over from the standard model. Sometimes, as the saying goes, you reach for something by mistake and see it hit ground that makes you not want to use that brake package again – such is the matter with a massive performance SUV.

Family Practicality Remains Intact

Despite its sporting intentions, the Armada Nismo doesn’t overlook its core family vehicle mission. Despite the changes, it still seats up to seven occupants with more than enough comfort expected of a full-size SUV.Front and second-row seats are still super comfortable, so long trips are still easy on the passengers. The third row still has enough room for adults on short journeys, maintaining the vehicle’s practicality.

Cargo versatility remains another strength. There is space for everyday luggage behind the third-row, and even more usefully, folding down that rear seat liberates a vast amount of cargo area. That way, the Armada Nismo can accommodate anything from family trips to bigger hauling missions.Compared with the most efficient regular Armada models, however, fuel economy takes a small step back. However, buyers in the market for a big, bombastic SUV are unlikely to be worried about joining an age of more economical machines.

Nissan Armada Nismo succeeds because it brings real character and some worthwhile upgrades to the SUV while leaving much of what made the standard model appealing mostly untouched. Special looking, more powerful, better handling and still a great family SUV.
